A telehandler (also called a telescopic handler) is a type of construction unit that, to explain it in the simplest way, combines a forklift’s load-lifting functionality with the ranged motion provided by a crane. They’re typically found on the back of a vehicle, manned by a trained operator.
A great feature with the telehandler is that it has the potential to do more than just lifting. Depending on the function you require, you can change attachments to suit the job, making them great machines for both construction sites and agricultural land.
So, if you are looking for the best type of telehandler for construction, what you should be looking at is instead what attachments a telehandler can use for construction jobs.
Some of the best types of telehandler attachments for construction include:
The bucket attachment for a telehandler is one of the most commonly seen components, often called a ‘digger’ because, you guessed it, it digs. This can be useful when digging up earth if a flat surface is required, or even scooping up gravel or materials in a pile that are needed for a job. The operator can then lift the bucket, and drive to the area the materials are needed.
Similar in appearance to a bucket, only without the sides and made of a thinner but sturdier metal, a blade is an attachment that works to push earth around and flatten the land, turning your telehandler into a dozer. This attachment is great to utilise on a jobsite before building actually starts. These are especially popular overseas during winter as they are handy to push snow out of streets and driveways.
The hook attachment is a sturdy board with holes for the forklift section of the telehandler to slip into, which has a sturdy hook attached by a short chain on the base. What makes the hook attachment so great is that, since it fixes onto the forks, you can place another attachment onto the carriage (providing it doesn’t interfere with the hook), giving the telehandler a multipurpose.
Clamp attachments are used to pick up and lift items without the need for a pallet. You can get specific models for specific materials, including concrete blocks and foam blocks. Certain clamps may have a polyurethane pad along the arms, which helps it grip onto irregular surfaces. These attachments are even useful in the agriculture sector, with clamps suited to lifting hay bales existing in the market today.
Another unique type of telehandler attachment worth checking out is the pipe grapple. The pipe grapple does as its name suggests – it grapples pipes. Unlike the above mentioned clamp attachment, here, the fork slides beneath the pipes and the top arms clamp down on top of the pipe, stopping the pipes from rolling off the carriage. It’s important to mention that some pipe grapples can handle multiple pipes at once whereas others are more suited to lifting heavier pipes one at a time.
These are some of the most common attachments in the market, however, there are so many different options to consider. The possibilities are endless when it comes to these vehicles and they will make a great addition to any project.
