Everything You Need to Know About Scissor Lift Maintenance

Yet with some specialist machinery, it’s about more than care to keep it operational. Regular inspection and maintenance of your EWP equipment is a statutory requirement to ensure the machine is safe to operate as well as being essential to maintaining its longevity.

Here is a handy check-list to help you understand your scissor lift maintenance requirements short and long term.

Pre-start Inspection

The scissor lift pre-start checklist is conducted by a qualified operator at the beginning of the day or before usage to check the machine is functioning correctly. This identifies if there is any wear and tear that requires attention, any damaged, missing or broken parts, and whether the equipment is in the correct and safe state to operate.

Both operational and structural components of the machinery must be checked, which is referenced in the machine’s factory-issued manual. If you notice damaged or warped parts within your machine, tag it and do not use the lift until it has been fully repaired and cleared for usage.

Note: a pre-start inspection must be coupled with regular scissor lift maintenance by a heavy equipment specialist mechanic like SuperService™.

90 day and Annual Inspection

These inspections are a statutory requirement that must be completed by a qualified technician every 90 days (three months) and annually (twelve months). However, depending on the frequency of use and the severity of working conditions, your machine may need more regular inspections.

These types of inspection include a written report provided post-inspection with any points of action that need undertaking or parts that must be replaced or repaired before next usage.

All inspections, services, identified faults and repairs must be logged in the machine’s EWP maintenance booklet.

Note: the scissor lift inspection must be completed by a person who does not normally operate the EWP.

Major Inspection

Major inspections are conducted at 10 years then every 5 years afterwards.

These major inspections include a thorough pre-strip down test and report, complete strip down, crack testing of critical components, pins and bushes, repairs, and replacement of damaged or non-functional items. Once reassembly is complete, the machine is assessed and calibrated to OEM standards, and recertified with a detailed report and new compliance plate. A qualified and competent person must complete this work.
