How to Maintain Your Vehicle Loading Crane (VLC)

A vehicle loading crane (VLC) consists of a crane which is mounted to a vehicle in order to facilitate loading and unloading. These versatile machines can lift and lower materials as well as move loads horizontally. VLCs are used for a wide range of operations, including erecting small structures and moving materials on and off the truck bed or trailer and on the ground. As with all forms of heavy equipment, these machines require regular inspections and maintenance to ensure they operate correctly, perform efficiently, and adhere to industry standards and regulations.

Inspection Requirements

Vehicle Loading Cranes are subject to AS1418 and at a minimum receive annual inspections and have major inspections undertaken at 10 years, then again at each preceding 5 years.

1. Annual 3rd party inspection

These inspections are necessary for the continued safe use of your VLC over a 12-month period as they confirm adherence to Australian standards and safety regulations. These types of crane inspections must be performed by a suitably qualified and independent third-party service provider like SuperService™.

This annual inspection includes, but is not limited to:

  • Functions and controls.
  • Emergency and safety switches and interlocks.
  • Lubrication of moving parts.
  • Filters, fluid levels, and leaks.
  • Visual inspection, testing and calibration of the VLC functions and features.
  • An estimation of the remaining design working period (DWP).

 2. Major inspection (10-year and 5-year)

Major inspections are required when your VLC has reached the end of its design life. Comprehensive inspection and testing of structures, hydraulics, electrical system, calibration, load test and safety stop/cut outs are undertaken to OEM and Australian standards to identify necessary repairs and upgrades in order to be compliant with the current standard.

Although annual, 10-year, and 5-year inspections are mandated, usage rate may necessitate more frequent inspections. A heavy equipment specialist like SuperService™ can help determine required inspection intervals.

Maintenance and repairs

Another important way to maintain your VLC is by adhering to strict service schedules. Preventative crane maintenance reduces the risk of unexpected downtime or repairs.
